velessa: (Horses - my tattoo)

I HAVE A TATTOO!

I didn't do this in haste or on a whim. For at least a decade now I've been contemplating getting a horse-related tattoo of some sort. Maybe five years or so ago I came across an image online of a beautiful ink painting of a horse head that absolutely I loved. It's simple and elegant and just amazing; for some reason it just spoke to me. I saved it and thought it might make a nice tattoo someday.

That image has been in the back of my head ever since I saw it and, for whatever reason, recently surfaced more and more in my mind. For the past few weeks I've thought about it all the time and decided I finally did really want to get it tattooed on me. I don't know, I felt like I had to get it done before I turn 29 next week or something. lol

I asked people about their tattoo experiences, kept a copy of the image in my purse, got reviews on local tattoo places, and planned to go check one out today to make an appointment. As luck would have it, they were available to take me right then, so I went for it! I didn't want to give myself the chance to chicken out, haha. I had much the same problem when I got my ears pierced for my 10th birthday. I knew it was something I wanted to have done, but I put it off for ages because I was worried about how much it would hurt. In fact, I deliberately chose this particular image as a good one for a tattoo because it is so simple, and I figured it would be easy to do and over with quickly!

Well, just like when I got my ears pierced, I needn't have been so concerned about the pain. I wouldn't say it so much hurt as felt more like a kind of weird buzzing sensation on my skin that was vaguely stabby. I did choose a not-particularly-sensitive location for the tattoo, though (the back of my left shoulder), for a few reasons: wouldn't hurt as much, is easily covered but also easy to show off in warm weather, and it's the part of me that's been injured the most due to my love of horses. So it has some symbolism there. ;) Also, it's highly appropriate that it is a Japanese style of ink painting (sumi-e) because it represents my love of Japanese as well. It's a perfect fit for me. =)

Enough rambling, here it is! I love it!!

First, the picture that inspired it:

Here's the tattoo just upon completion:

And here are a few pictures a few hours later, taken by me in the mirror. It is not easy to get a decent looking photo of your own back!
