Computer fixed. The power outage messed up the voltage or overclocking on the motherboard? Something like that, I don't know. Dad had to come over and get it to boot up from a disk and then fixed whatever the problem was. Phew! I think I'll go ahead and get a UPS to avoid more of this, I didn't realize just having the computer plugged in even if it was turned off was enough to make bad things happen. =p

ETA: But grrrrr, two of my external hard drives (out of four) aren't turning on now! All four of them were plugged in to the same power strip, WTF?

Sometime today the power went out, and when I got home from class what do I find but a computer that won't boot up. It wasn't even turned on today! I definitely turned it off last night. Stupid fricking thing. I'm now on my laptop which I pulled out for the first time in oh probably three years at least.

Also, this morning when I left there were at least 8 police cars in the parking lot next to me...I didn't see them until I was driving away, but I wondered what was going on to require so many. I figured it's Sunnyvale and they probably have nothing better to do, maybe a domestic dispute or something. But lo, I get home tonight with a notice on my door that there's been a "tragic death" in our apartment complex that is under investigation! So now I'm wondering just what the hell happened...there were never any sirens or anything, which is why I didn't even know the police were here until I actually saw them. O_o

Because I do! ♥ ♥ ♥

Tonight he took apart my computer and installed a wireless card so I could use the internet again, even though it was already 11pm. So happy to be back online at home!

Tonight after work I went riding, which was lots of fun, then I went to my parents' to pick up the cats and bring them home to the new place. Rembrandt started exploring everything immediately; Serenity hid under the bed and Cricket hid in a corner. But a little while ago I heard a sort of crashing sound and got up to check it out (which is what I'm doing up at 6am on a Saturday!). Turns out it was just Serenity playing on the new cat tree. All three of them are now out and about checking everything out; I think they'll like it here as much as we do. =)

Yesterday when I got home from work I found my computer in an odd state. For the most part it looked fine, except that one of my hard drives said it was no longer formatted! It acted as though it were completely empty, totally blank, nothing on it, when I KNEW that wasn't the case. Needless to say I was freaking out since I had TONS of stuff on it that I needed to get to. Thankfully I live with a wonderful computer geek who fixed the problem for me. ^_~

I guess there are some errors somewhere on the drive, but I haven't run into them yet. At least everything on it is recognizable again so I can actually access it. Today I ran out after work and bought yet another external hard drive to back it all up on. I don't know what happened to screw up the thing in the first place, but I guess I'll be leaving my computer off from now on while I'm at work! Damn machines can't be trusted to be left on their own.

AAARRRGGGH DAMMIT!!! My computer has died yet again. I don't know what happened, it just lost power and turned off, and now it won't turn back on. I hate it! What the hell is the problem this time? The motherboard and power supply are only like 3 months old! I've had it with this Frankenstein's monster piece of junk, I should just have it rebuilt from scratch with all new parts. SIGH. At least I have my laptop to fall back on, but all my unsorted mp3s/radio shows/unwatched anime are on my main computer. =(

Dude...what the heck?! Okay, everything seems to be working again, all the Japanese characters are back to normal. I didn't change anything, so I'm faulting Livejournal and more of their toying around. That was really weird.

Okay! Main computer is up and running again! It turns out that the CPU burned out; there's a nice big burn mark in the middle and that's what was making the smell. So phew, I have access to all my stuff again! AND RIGHT NOW I'M GOING TO BACK UP EVERY DAMN THING ON MY HARD DRIVES!!!

More experimenting with my crippled computer; the power supply may not have been the problem after all. Today dad tried a different video card and the same stuff was happening: the computer would boot up okay for a minute and then shut off again, and something still definitely smells like it's fried. Since the power supply is brand new that can't be the problem. Since this time we had the side off and the smell seemed to be coming from the motherboard/CPU vicinity, I'll need to get new ones and see how that works out.

Well, good news and bad news about my computer. The good news is the hard drives seem to be completely fine; all my stuff is there and nothing has changed. The bad news is getting to the data. The power supply now works, but either the motherboard or video card or both seem to be screwed up and I'll need to get new ones. I don't know if either of them went bad before or if this is a result of the CPU fan crashing down on top of the video card because it wasn't attached securely. Either way my computer once again has to be partially rebuilt (I've had my computer rebuilt every 2-3 years when something or other inevitably wears out and fails), so I'll be without it for a few days. Bah. Well I guess I'll have to download any new anime episodes on this new drive for a while until my computer gets up and running again.

Looks like the storm is finally here...first thunder, now hail.

So I ran out to Fry's a little while ago and met up with my dad there on his lunch hour. I got an external hard drive to back up all my stuff on (which I hope I'll be able to get to!), and a new power supply dad'll install when he gets home from work. I really hope it's just the power supply; I've burned out at least two or three of them before because I pretty much have my computer on all the time, and this seems like the same thing. My computer just turned itself off and I smelled something weird, that's usually the power supply burning out. I did try restarting twice, and at least one of the times the computer began to boot up normally before turning off again, so I think the hard drives are probably okay. If they're not I have a TON of redownloading to do :(
