R.I.P. Smoky

I didn't get a chance to mention this earlier due to the move and everything, but we did finally have to end good old Smoky's suffering on Saturday, September 22nd. He had cancer in the entire upper part of his mouth and could no longer eat; we kept him on pain meds for a while, but it was obvious he was in horrible pain even with them. He was born in May of 1994 and was 13 years old.
Smoky was a quintessential scaredy cat, that is unless you were part of our immediate family. He would hide beneath furniture for as long as he suspected a stranger was in the house, but if you were one of us, you couldn't go anywhere without him around. Smoky was Ryan's cat and followed him around like a dog; Ryan couldn't sit anywhere without Smoky immediately jumping onto his lap. If Ryan was away for a day or two, Smoky would roam up and down the halls yowling during the night. More than a few times when Ryan wasn't around, Smoky, while seeking the attention he was missing, crept up behind me while I was at my desk then suddenly let out a very loud MEOW!!, scaring me half to death and letting me know he was unhappy about Ryan's absence. Nothing made Smoky happier than sitting on Ryan's lap, which he did until the end. Smoky is survived by his brother Simba (full brothers from the same litter) who is still living with my parents.
Goodbye, Smoky. You were a wonderful, sweet cat who had a good run, although you didn't deserve to go this soon.
