OMG yes go!!! It was awesome! I just got back. I never really liked any of the earlier shows, although my entire family is obsessed and I've seen just about every ST thing ever made. It was intense and fun and a good bridge I think between the original fans from the 60s to new ones for today.
based on my previous movie-going experiences with you, it is not the type of movie you enjoy for the following reasons:
1) content - full enjoyment requires detailed understanding of original star trek universe and cast
2) actors - no large names, and the recognizable people play minor roles; the main cast are lesser-known actors
3) humor - while it has funny moments, I don't think it's your kind of humor, more making light of the characters with respect to the original series (example: they make Checkov really young, which is a joke on him looking so young in the original series)
That movie was totally worth it. We went to see it in IMAX. It was both hilarious and epic. I've only watched a few scattered episodes of Star Trek and I loved it.

Date: 2009-05-10 09:42 pm (UTC)1. I have VERY little knowledge of Star Trek. They explained enough for the plot to be easy to follow.
2. I don't think big names make or break a movie. The guy playing Spock plays Sylar in Heroes, and the guy playing Kirk was just plain cute.
3. I agree that it was a very specific kind of humor. I enjoyed it, but that's beside the point.
4. I didn't notice any plot holes. I think it's just the kind of movie where you have to be willing to let some of the story line go.
