I disagree. First I have read it. Second the language is not exactly what federal law is. Third, telling people to stop protesting is ridiculous. That's like telling people to stop having opinions. Everyone I know who has spoken out against the new law are very intelligent and have analyzed the new law. However everyone who has the opinion of the new law is good has their rights too.

Yes, people can protest. But a lot of what gets to me is that most of the people bitching about the law don't even LIVE in Arizona, whereas a majority of those who DO live there support it. My favorite uncle and his family live there, and I can't imagine how awful it must be to live in constant fear of crime from an overwhelming population of illegals and drug runners, etc. the way they do.

While this law probably isn't the best way to go about doing something about the problem, at least it sends a message that something DOES need to be done. I can't blame them for trying to take matters into their own hands when the federal government has just sat around twiddling their thumbs and ignoring the problem.

I think the problem is that people don't understand the economics of illegal immigrants. There's a reason that the feds haven't cracked down harder. and won't ever.

Well yes, the underlying problem is that people hire illegal immigrants, so they continue to come here for work, and that far too many businesses rely on the uber-cheap labor they supply. I'd like to think that someday we can fix or get rid of those kind of slave labor/sweathouse type practices, but of course then the goods they produce would cost a lot more and people wouldn't want to pay for it. =\ (What do they do besides agricultural work anyway?) It's certainly a vicious circle.

So people support the law, but also support the practices that bring these immigrants to the state because otherwise OMG they'd have to pay fair prices for products.

Fine the businesses 10 times more than they'd pay in "legal" wages for every instance of illegal wages you find, and it'll stop. And then the prices will go up, and the people will have to decide if they like the new way better or not. But as long as the demand is there the supply will continue, new laws or not - it's the demand you have to go after, your legal citizens' demand for cheap products and cheap labor.

I do agree with the sentiment of "if you don't live there, you don't get it", even though I don't agree with the law. (I think the better way to deal with illegal immigration is to go after employers.)

Arizona's, like California's Prop 187, law was passed because people are fed up with the federal government not doing *anything* about illegal immigration, which impacts certain states (read Arizona) more than others (read Wisconsin). So it does come off to me as rather ignorant for people in WI to go "oh, those racist people in Arizona, how dare they!" when they haven't had to deal with, as you've noted, all the many problems that illegal immigration can bring.

Exactly. And there's a big, big difference between thinking this law is shit and being pro-illegal immigration. This law is shit, but that doesn't mean people can't come up with something that's not illegal and try and make it work.
