Bootsie, May ?, 1985 - January 27, 2007

I just wanted to write a little something about the passing of our oldest family dog ever, Bootsie. She was a Chihuahua/Dachshund mix we got from my uncle when I was 4. My uncle's dog, who was also named Bootsy, had puppies and we got one of them. My mom named her Bootsie for the little white "boots" on her feet. One of my earliest memories is of her sleeping on my bed in our old house just after she was spayed. She was a great dog, never a noisy little yapper like most small dogs are; she was certainly energetic and playful in her youth but never annoying. She's been a fixture of our family for pretty much as long as I can remember, nearly as long as my brother and I have been alive. So it's a little odd to know she's not there at my parents' house anymore like she always has been.

She was humanely euthanized on Saturday morning. At nearly 22 years old, she had been seriously going downhill these past few weeks, noticably faster than ever. By the end she was totally blind and deaf, just skin and bones and all hunched over, and could hardly stand up or walk; all she could do was kind of stumble around in small circles until her legs gave out. She spent most of her time in her old age sleeping. My parents finally decided they couldn't let her continue to deteriorate and be miserable any longer, and I agree with them. The last time I saw her was about a week ago, and she looked absolutely awful. I'm not really sorry to see her go; she had a good, long life, and she was definitely past due to move on. I think she's better off now.

So rest in peace, Bootsie. You were a great part of our family and will be missed.

It's always hard to see a friend go, but it's good to know she had such a loving, long life. *hugs*

*hugs* You had 22 wonderful years together. She is a family member, so you are entitled to grieve. They are the best family members of all.

22 years is an amazing lifespan for a dog! I'm sure you have tons of wonderful memories with her to cherish forever...I'm sorry to hear she had to go, but how wonderful that you had so much time together!

Awww, I'm going to miss my little Taco dog. She was always such a sweetheart. Even that one time when she ran out the back door and decided to tour the neighborhood before coming home, sending me into mild panic. lol She looked so happy when she came back. I'm glad I got to know her. *hugs* She will be missed.
